Violent Man

Köster-Lüers-Goodman / Velvetone

I wish I was six foot ten and a violent man,
strong like a bear with an iron hand.
Can’t explain, they don’t understand,
you look out all across the land !
I wanna be a gate crashin‘, loser bashin‘, fool slashin‘,
meanest, toughest son of a gun.

Anyone’ll tell I’m a peaceful guy,
some say weak, wouldn’t hurt a fly.
Sometimes the rage rises up in me,
still when the cure is plain to see :
love your sister, love your brother,
everybody care for each other.
But pop goes the shit and out come the fools,
That’ll be the time when my strong arm rules.

Don’t give a fuck ‚bout socialization.
Don’t gimme psychological explanation.
Always a reason why they act that way,
they’re too close, they ain’t makin‘ my day.
I wanna kick you out the door,
you ain’t gonna mess with me no more.
Say your prayers you dusty farts,
now’s the time the rumble starts.

There’s a whole lot more than black and white,
a third way between wrong and right.
Feel so tired, helpless and small.
Just one way to get along with them all :
love your gun like your brother,
I shoot one, you shoot the other.
Pop goes my piece, end up in jail,
that’ll be the day when my strong arm fails.

I wish I was six foot ten and a violent man,
strong like a bear with an iron hand.
Can’t explain, they don’t understand,
you look out all across the land !
I wanna be a gate crashin‘,
loser bashin‘,
fool slashin‘,
jerk smashin‘,
redneck bashin‘,
ass hole clashin‘,
meanest, toughest son of a gun.

Velvetone are like a garage version of Robert Gordon and Link Wray!

This is what ROLLING STONE Magazine wrote about one of Germany’s premier roots/rock combos. The band would like to point out, there is no ‚S‘ in Velvetone…
Velvetone are original. If it comes to comparing, names like Los Lobos, or The Paladins come to mind. Their members Thomas Yearsley and Dave Gonzalez are close musical friends and fans of Velvetone.
The music might best be described as high-energy American style roots rock. Velvetone are loud and straight-forward, powerfully driven by the energy of vintage rockabilly.
Velvetone are unique. On their first album for our CrossCut label they are presenting mostly originals. Their repertoire stretches wide, from straight rockers to a Tex-Mex-style polka, and moody ballads.
Velvetone sound willfull and dark. Their music has a contemporary sound and feel, soulful yet sometimes low and dirty. „Dark Blossom“ is a superb example of American style roots music, produced in Europe.
Extra support comes from rock’n’roll legend Wanda Jackson, ex-Tom Waits accordionist Willy Schwarz, and the tight Swim-Two-Birds-Horns.

Welcome on board!

Reviews ‚Dark Blossom‘

Most unusual, adventerous “Crawl-A-Billy”…could also say Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps on all kind of psychedelic influences .. Killer!
Lord Litter Radio Show

Lord Litter

If David Lynch ever makes a movie about the odd going-ons in small town somewhere in Germany, he will clearly be casting Velvetone as the band that plays at the local watering hole (…). Velvetone’s sound is deliciously dark and murky (…) That feeling fins its fullest expression on lengthier tracks like “Last Destination” and “Endless Sleep” that have a distinctly noirish feel (…). (…) any band that can persuade Wanda Jackson to sind along with their version of (…) “Funnel Of Love” knows all about fun. (…) The fact that Velvetone laces that fun with a dark element makes Dark Blossom that much more enticing.

It’s gritty yet sleek with very smooth twanging steel guitars and southern American style vocals. The album is very tongue-in-cheek and has an overall sense of fun. At times, it’s like a bizarre freakshow taking place in the back of motel club off an obscure highway in the Midwest states, like a scene from Twin Peaks. The quality of the sound, production and packaging is excellent (…) All music for drinking spirits and dancing until the early hours of the morning. They capture the very essence and soul of the rockabilly era with perfection.

(…)wham-bam-thank-you-men!

(…) das genial schmierige “Funnel Of Love” featuring Wanda Jackson. Da fühlt man sich an gute alte Gallon Drunk-Zeiten erinnert.

Moonstruck

Wittke / Wittke-Lüers

I try to get myself to sleep every night,
and sometimes I dream quite well,
but once in a month when the moon starts to grin,
my life turns into livin‘ hell.

Something’s going wrong with the people in town,
it seems I’m no longer alone.

I’m moonstruck, baby I am moonstruck
I’m moonstruck, I’m bound by his light,
I’m moonstruck, It’s crazy but I’m moonstruck,
I’m moonstruck, not only at night.

I lie on my bed strangle cushion and sheets,
though I even can’t close my eyes,
so I go for a walk and stay out late at night,
hope that the bad times go by.

Something’s going wrong with the people in town,
it seems I’m no longer alone.

I’m moonstruck, baby I am moonstruck
I’m moonstruck, I’m bound by his light,
I’m moonstruck, It’s crazy but I’m moonstruck,
I’m moonstruck, not only at night.

I need somebody, need some buddy,
who drags my body out of this bloody…
Moonstruck

All my friends (yeah) they know what kinda man I could be,
when this big ole moon shines so bright,
so you better take care when you meet ma at the time,
even when you won’t see his light.

Something’s going wrong with the people in town,
it seems I’m no longer alone.

I’m moonstruck, baby I am moonstruck
I’m moonstruck, I’m bound by his light,
I’m moonstruck, It’s crazy but I’m moonstruck,
I’m moonstruck, not only at night.

I’ve never known a more sincere group of guys than the members of Velvetone. They are what we call down home types. Pals, buddies, the kind of guys you can hang out with, shoot a game of pool with or just share a beer. The music? No nonsense Rock’n’Roll. Tuff sensual grooves, rumbling bass, big drum beat, twangin‘ edgy guitar with a vocal that can change the mood from a cry to a scream to a soft melancholy whisper. It’s a good vibe. ‚On The Waterfront‘ meets ‚Dirty Harry‘ down the dead end of a lonely street to ‚Thunder road‘ is where the album takes me. Bogart sittin‘ in a smokey bar with John Wayne romancing Patsy Cline in Elvira’s Negligé. The mixture of influences on this record are like a brilliant concoction of your favorite whiskeys and gins with a tequila chaser that puts fire in your soul, thunder in your blood stream and a menacing grin on your kisser. Lights me up man and sends me out under thick black clouds chasing lost purple skies howlin‘ at the moon. That’s what Velvetone is. Now I’m in a mood.
