„It’s A Long Way From Home.
„Welcome to the Pleasuredome, let’s go on a SWITCHBACK RIDE“.

Reviews ‚Switchback Ride‘

German rockabilly and rock’n’roll outfit Velvetone unleash their infectious style on an unsuspecting audience with this gem of an album. Opening with the powerful R&B / rockabilly hybrid ‚Leave Me Cryin“ they take you on a roller coaster that you’ll never want to leave.(…) This is a complete surprise and a happy one at that!

(…) Besser können es auch die Amis nicht!

Reverend Horton-Heat, Tav Falco, Brian Setzer and Paladins give thumbs up to this German twangbilly outfit, and it’s easy to hear why they’d dig Velvetone. It’s elegantly executed rockabilly with some cool rootsy flavors, but they’re sure ain’t afraid to take chances, not many greaser bands would cover Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Welcome To The Pleasuredome”!(…) Velvetone is belong in the top league of Euro twangsters, and they’d be perfect at a “Punk & Billy Bash” gig. If I had a car this disc would obligatory driving music.

Violent Man

Köster-Lüers-Goodman / Velvetone

I wish I was six foot ten and a violent man,
strong like a bear with an iron hand.
Can’t explain, they don’t understand,
you look out all across the land !
I wanna be a gate crashin‘, loser bashin‘, fool slashin‘,
meanest, toughest son of a gun.

Anyone’ll tell I’m a peaceful guy,
some say weak, wouldn’t hurt a fly.
Sometimes the rage rises up in me,
still when the cure is plain to see :
love your sister, love your brother,
everybody care for each other.
But pop goes the shit and out come the fools,
That’ll be the time when my strong arm rules.

Don’t give a fuck ‚bout socialization.
Don’t gimme psychological explanation.
Always a reason why they act that way,
they’re too close, they ain’t makin‘ my day.
I wanna kick you out the door,
you ain’t gonna mess with me no more.
Say your prayers you dusty farts,
now’s the time the rumble starts.

There’s a whole lot more than black and white,
a third way between wrong and right.
Feel so tired, helpless and small.
Just one way to get along with them all :
love your gun like your brother,
I shoot one, you shoot the other.
Pop goes my piece, end up in jail,
that’ll be the day when my strong arm fails.

I wish I was six foot ten and a violent man,
strong like a bear with an iron hand.
Can’t explain, they don’t understand,
you look out all across the land !
I wanna be a gate crashin‘,
loser bashin‘,
fool slashin‘,
jerk smashin‘,
redneck bashin‘,
ass hole clashin‘,
meanest, toughest son of a gun.

I’ve never known a more sincere group of guys than the members of Velvetone. They are what we call down home types. Pals, buddies, the kind of guys you can hang out with, shoot a game of pool with or just share a beer. The music? No nonsense Rock’n’Roll. Tuff sensual grooves, rumbling bass, big drum beat, twangin‘ edgy guitar with a vocal that can change the mood from a cry to a scream to a soft melancholy whisper. It’s a good vibe. ‚On The Waterfront‘ meets ‚Dirty Harry‘ down the dead end of a lonely street to ‚Thunder road‘ is where the album takes me. Bogart sittin‘ in a smokey bar with John Wayne romancing Patsy Cline in Elvira’s Negligé. The mixture of influences on this record are like a brilliant concoction of your favorite whiskeys and gins with a tequila chaser that puts fire in your soul, thunder in your blood stream and a menacing grin on your kisser. Lights me up man and sends me out under thick black clouds chasing lost purple skies howlin‘ at the moon. That’s what Velvetone is. Now I’m in a mood.
