Crashin’ in a beaver dam another Fuzzy big black out

LINER NOTES
I remember the first time I saw Velvetone burning up the stage ten years ago…
I looked at the room packed with dancing sweating bodies, then my toe started tapping and my hands got to clapping then my shyness was slipping cause them boys was rippin!
Then the heat of the beat overtook me and hooked me and I was dancing too!
They’ll swing you they’ll bop you then they’ll honky tonk you.
They’ll tickle your soul, make you reel till you roll
Serenade you so blue with that sound sweet and true
They’ll roll you they’ll rock you – Look out! They’ll cold-cock you
They’ll get you to shout till you’ve knocked yourself out
What they play you will feel – Nothing but the real deal!
Not much has changed since that night long ago, except my good pals Velvetone have gotten a whole lot more experience, touring with and supporting some of the best Roots Rock acts around, and, I’m proud to say, collaborating with me on my newest musical project, The Rabble Rousers. Oh yeah, they’ve also gotten lots better with every year that has passed since then. If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor: Check ‘em out!

Lil‘ Bad Thing
Lüers-Merck-Wittke-Ulrich
You opened your heart
Showed me your soul
Offered up your love
Such a good show
I was hypnotized
By your tempting lies
I barely survived
Attacks of that blade
You little bad thing, you little bad thing
I tried to resist your siren song
Followed you blind caught by your tongue
Good scenes fade to black
A knife stuck in my back
I’m deadly attracted
The chains of your love
You little bad thing, you little bad thing
I free myself –
You don’t accept
You tighten the bondage
“ i’m still the best “
I need to breathe
You gotta be stopped
I’ll be myself
But i still love …
… You little bad thing
You opened your heart showed me your soul
Offered up your love such a good show
I was hypnotized
By your tempting lies
I’ll be myself
But i still love …
… You little bad thing
Seven
Lüers-Merck-Wittke-Ulrich
Seven thoughts i spent
To get what’s going on
Seven thoughts
Just made me sad
Everything that’s left
Are pieces left behind
Now all that’s left
Is your malicious mind
I’ve learned the lessons life has taught me
Leaving all the battles now that caught me.
You’ll be lonely after seven thoughts
Seven lies you spent
To satisfy your needs
Seven lies
Someone was blinded
Everything you said
A song can’t sound so sweet
Everthing you said
Disciples will believe
I’ve learned the lessons life has taught me
Leaving the chapters now that caught me
You’ll be lonely after seven lies
Seven years you’ve been
The devil in disguise
Seven years
You tried to grow
Every single one
You preached a bitter step
Every single one
Let me get one step ahead
I’ve learned the lessons life has taught me
Leaving those years behind that caught me
You’ll be lonely after seven years

Reviews CCR 4501
A German four piece specialising in what is now called ‚roots rock‘ or ‚Americana‘, the topside is a thundering slab of rockabilly-tinged rock and roll, complete with ringing guitar work. The flip leans a little more towards country – most noticeably Johnny Cash – and very successfully too. Put this record on at a party and watch people trying to figure out who it is! If the album is all up to this standard, it’ll definitely be a goodie.
Blues & Rhythm
2008-03
Norman Darwen
Now this 45-rpm has music of the German urban rhythm & blues, roots-rock band Velvetone, two songs: ‚Lil‘ Bad Thing‘ and ‚Seven‘. The former (on the A-side) is a grand rock’n roll tune, the latter (B-side) is a roots song in the purest sense of the word. There is some country (Johnny Cash, Morricone) and the rockabilly line is obvious. (…) Lovers of vinyl, this is a good deal! You can choose between the black ‚regular‘ record and a limited edition… white vinyl.

Bobtje Blues
Seite A, bzw.

Moonstruck
Wittke / Wittke-Lüers
I try to get myself to sleep every night,
and sometimes I dream quite well,
but once in a month when the moon starts to grin,
my life turns into livin‘ hell.
Something’s going wrong with the people in town,
it seems I’m no longer alone.
I’m moonstruck, baby I am moonstruck
I’m moonstruck, I’m bound by his light,
I’m moonstruck, It’s crazy but I’m moonstruck,
I’m moonstruck, not only at night.
I lie on my bed strangle cushion and sheets,
though I even can’t close my eyes,
so I go for a walk and stay out late at night,
hope that the bad times go by.
Something’s going wrong with the people in town,
it seems I’m no longer alone.
I’m moonstruck, baby I am moonstruck
I’m moonstruck, I’m bound by his light,
I’m moonstruck, It’s crazy but I’m moonstruck,
I’m moonstruck, not only at night.
I need somebody, need some buddy,
who drags my body out of this bloody…
Moonstruck
All my friends (yeah) they know what kinda man I could be,
when this big ole moon shines so bright,
so you better take care when you meet ma at the time,
even when you won’t see his light.
Something’s going wrong with the people in town,
it seems I’m no longer alone.
I’m moonstruck, baby I am moonstruck
I’m moonstruck, I’m bound by his light,
I’m moonstruck, It’s crazy but I’m moonstruck,
I’m moonstruck, not only at night.

I’ve never known a more sincere group of guys than the members of Velvetone. They are what we call down home types. Pals, buddies, the kind of guys you can hang out with, shoot a game of pool with or just share a beer. The music? No nonsense Rock’n’Roll. Tuff sensual grooves, rumbling bass, big drum beat, twangin‘ edgy guitar with a vocal that can change the mood from a cry to a scream to a soft melancholy whisper. It’s a good vibe. ‚On The Waterfront‘ meets ‚Dirty Harry‘ down the dead end of a lonely street to ‚Thunder road‘ is where the album takes me. Bogart sittin‘ in a smokey bar with John Wayne romancing Patsy Cline in Elvira’s Negligé. The mixture of influences on this record are like a brilliant concoction of your favorite whiskeys and gins with a tequila chaser that puts fire in your soul, thunder in your blood stream and a menacing grin on your kisser. Lights me up man and sends me out under thick black clouds chasing lost purple skies howlin‘ at the moon. That’s what Velvetone is. Now I’m in a mood.

The first time I saw Velvetone was in November ’95 in Bremen, Germany, which is a long way from my home in California. I kept thinkin‘ to myself „man, do I know these guys?“
An old familiar feeling was pulsing through my veins as their band was layin‘ it down to stay. Yeah, I’ll tell you what it was: it brought me back to the days in ’81, when the Paladins were first takin‘ the road from San Diego out to Phoenix, AZ. It was there we found a vivacious scene of about a dozen or so Rockabilly/Rock’n’Roll bands that resembled a camp of banditos more than the down rite hot players that they were – groups like The Geezers, Colin Winsky, The Varmints and Hellfire.
Velvetone should have been there!
Playin‘ clubs like The Mason Jar, Merlins and The Sun Club, all us bands would turn these trashy little Honky Tonks into a Rock’n’Roll riot. We sang about Cadillacs and owned them too. We’d park ‚em in front of the club, all in a line.
Velvetone would’ve had theirs out there.
The clubs would shut down at 1:00 am, but that didn’t mean the jam was over. We’d all head over to The Hell House and jam till dawn, or till it got over 105°F, which ever came first.
I swear I saw Velvetone there.
One afternoon we were cleaning up after one of those nights. We found so many bottles and cans that we cashed ‚em in and bought a keg of beer and some ice, put it in a shoppping cart, took our acoustics and rambled through the town, singin‘ and playin‘ and quenchin‘ the thirst of a massive crowd on that day in 115°F heat …
Yeah, but that night in Bremen last November… It was snowin‘ outdoors, but I was breakin‘ into a mighty sweat watchin‘ Velvetone bring on that old Rock’n’Roll feeling.
